Trying to function like everything is fine when you have a toothache can be nearly impossible. After all, when you’re in pain, it’s hard to focus on anything else. If you’re experiencing a toothache and waiting to be seen by your emergency dentist, here are a few safe and effective home remedies that can help ease your discomfort until it’s time for your appointment.

Cold Compresses

While they can’t go inside your mouth, you can hold a cold compress against the outside of your cheek for 20 minutes at a time. This will help soothe tooth pain while reducing any swelling that could be caused by your injury.

Saltwater

Saltwater is an excellent home remedy for dental pain, because in addition to helping to keep your mouth clean, it also soothes discomfort. Just boil one cup of water with one teaspoon of salt and stir until the salt dissolves. Allow it to cool enough that it’s still warm but will not burn your mouth, and then gently swish it around. When you are done, spit it out and rinse your mouth with warm, plain water. Repeat every few hours as necessary.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is another great way to keep your mouth clean during a toothache. It can ease discomfort by rinsing away dangerous bacteria that could be causing painful inflammation. Just swish three-percent hydrogen peroxide in your mouth for a few seconds and then spit it out. Be sure to rinse very well with plain water.

Hydrogen peroxide also has the added benefit of helping to eliminate foul tastes in your mouth that could be caused by the toothache.

Clove Oil

Clove oil contains a naturally occurring numbing agent called eugenol. To use, apply a small amount to a cotton swab or ball, and gently dab it on the affected tooth, or hold it against the tooth for extended pain relief.

Cayenne & Ginger Paste

Cayenne pepper contains capsaicin, a natural numbing agent, and ginger has anti-inflammatory properties. When the two are combined, it creates a pain-relieving paste that can be applied directly to your aching tooth. Just mix cayenne pepper, ginger, and a bit of water together. Then, apply the paste directly to the tooth via a cotton ball or swab and hold it in place, being careful not to get it on your other teeth or gums.

Remember, if you are experiencing a toothache, it is important to see your dentist as soon as possible. In the meantime, try one of these home remedies for safe and effective pain relief!
