What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a cap customized to match your natural tooth structure. These appliances are cemented over damaged teeth to allow them to function normally again while protecting them from further damage. They are often used to treat teeth that have been broken, eroded by advanced decay, or compromised by a dental treatment such as a root canal. They also only require the same oral hygiene routine as your real teeth.

Almost anyone can be an excellent candidate for a dental crown as long as their mouth is free of gum disease and tooth decay. Placing a dental crown can aggravate these conditions, so it’s important to have them cleared up before receiving one.

The Dental Crown Process

It usually takes two appointments to place a dental crown, and we make ours from beautiful porcelain or zirconia to create the most lifelike restorations possible. Before you can receive a dental crown, you’ll need to have a consultation at our office to make sure that you can be a good candidate. After any gum disease and tooth decay have been resolved, you’ll come in for your first appointment, during which our dentist will numb the tooth being treated before reshaping it to create the most comfortable fit for the crown. Our dentist will then take bite impressions and place a temporary crown so you can get used to wearing it.

It takes a few weeks for the lab to manufacture your permanent crown, and you’ll come back to our office once we receive it. During your second appointment, the temporary crown will be replaced with the permanent one. After we make any final adjustments, you’ll be ready to meet the world with your beautifully restored smile.

The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

Not getting a needed dental crown can lead to unfortunate consequences such as continuing tooth decay and tooth loss. Dental crowns offer a range of benefits such as:

  • Improving the patient’s comfort and chewing ability
  • Preventing the need for extraction by protecting your natural teeth
  • Addressing several oral health problems with one treatment
  • Being customized to match the rest of your smile so that no one will be able to tell that they are different from your natural teeth

With excellent care and proper hygiene that includes brushing, flossing, and routine checkups, crowns can last for more than fifteen years before needing replacement.
